May 27 - Tuesday

There were 50 at coffee this morning. We had a vote on summer hours for the coffee hour. The results were: 8 o'clock coffee = 30,  9 o'clock coffee = 13. We will then continue with the 8 o'clock coffee hour. Gene Mathes is acting president during the summer until the president or vice-president return.

May 26 - Monday

There were 45 at the annual Memorial Day Potluck tonight.

Queen Anlee and King Gene were greeters tonight. Hostess Anne Hubert welcomed the crowd and led in the pledge to the flag.

Jimmy Johnson provided the blessing for the food. As usual we had a great supply of food and every bit of it was good

May 20 - Tuesday

Anlee was modeling her new tiara at coffee this morning. There were 57 for the first coffee with acting president Gene Mathes in charge. Next Tuesday Gene will be taking a vote for adopting a summer coffee hour of 9 am for June, July and August. If you are interested be sure to be there for the vote.

May 19 - Monday

We had our first summer Pool Party this afternoon. The rainy weather stopped our gathering around the pool but we still had our meal. Here is Anlee and Jan cooking their food on the grills. By this time the rain had stopped and the sun came out.

After the great meal we all participated in a sing-a-long led by Gene. Gene also entertained us with a few solos.

May 13 - Tuesday

There were 55 at coffee this morning. President Mike Delany, right, passed the gavel to acting president Gene Mathes, left, while he spends the summer at his northern home.

Gene Mathes and his friend Fred Frank spent the morning riding their bikes the full length of the Legacy Trail and more, a total of 22 miles. The southern end of the trail is at this bridge over Donna Bay in Venice. The bridge will be replaced when funding is available.

Here is a small section of the track that was left when the trail was built. This railroad bridge, built in 1911, was preserved so all could see the trestle bridge construction which was used then.

May 10 - Saturday

There were ten of us at the pool today. The weather has been great for going to the pool. It seems like every day there are a few less.

May 9 - Friday

These three men became good friends on their trip to the Holy Land in March. They are Bill Dunham, Ralph Robinson and Gene Mathes. When they returned to Sarasota they decided to have lunch together a couple of times a month. Their last lunch was at Hooters but Ralph didn't show up. Gene sent him an email saying how broken up they were that he didn't make it and enclosed this picture to show him how sad they were. Ralph never answered the email.

May 7 - Wednesday

On April 29 Doreen Gibbons caught this three foot, 18 pound hammerhead shark at Turtle Beach. It took about 15 minutes to land. She was using a light spinning rod with a live shrimp for bait. About 20 people gathered around, all very excited. The hook was removed and the shark was released  unharmed.

May 6 - Tuesday

There were 64 at the pancake breakfast this morning.

The great kitchen crew consisted of Ada Murphy, Ed Schattschneider, Ward Young, Charlie Parkes, Joan Kapp, Marti Gauthier, Audrey Young and Grace Sherry. Bob Gorden was proud to have his three visiting daughters Debbie, Cindy and Linda all join him at the pancake breakfast this morning.
