We had a special guest speaker this morning. Melinda Morgan, volunteer with the American Cancer Society spoke about the  need for volunteers to drive patients, undergoing treatment, to and from health care facilities in the Sarasota County area. They presently have only two but four from Orange Acres agreed to help out and go through the training required.

We had 37 at the pancake breakfast this morning. Here is the great pancake crew. The men in back were Ward Young, Dwight Holden and Charlie Parkes. The women in front were Audrey Young, Bobbie Holden, Marti Gauthier and Grace Sherry. Ed Schattschneider was also a helper but missed the picture. Great job folks.

June 12 - Thursday

A training session for volunteers to drive patients, undergoing treatment, to and from health care facilities in the Sarasota County area was held in our clubhouse today. At right, leading the training, is Marion Stuart, Area Patient Representative with the American Cancer Society. Next is Volunteer, Melinda Morgan who recruited volunteer drivers at our coffee hour on Tuesday. The other three are driver volunteers, two of them from Orange Acres.

June 14 - Saturday

I went to the "FREE Kayak Demo Day" today at Ackerman Park which is behind Fruitville Public Library. This is sponsored most Saturday mornings by "Economy Tackle" at 6018 S. Tamiami Trail.

It is free to the public and starts at 11 am. Go to their web site to check them out if you are interested: www.floridakayak.com I tried out about 4 kayaks and am still confused. I liked them all. I am going to get one as soon as I can make up my mind.

I (Gene Mathes) finally bought the kayak I have been wanting. Here I am paddling the Sarasota bay at 7:15 am this morning. My plans are to do this about three times a week on the days I do not go to the gym.
