August 4 - Friday

Greetings from North Carolina.  As I write, I am sitting in the glider on the porch facing the Smoky Mountains, but thinking of our new home in Orange Acres.  Already I'm anxious to return and resume getting acquainted with everyone.  Each week I check the news of the latest activities and think of you.  The picture of Dwight and me was taken upon our arrival at our son's home.  Last week we attended a family reunion (46 of us!) high in the mountains near Cashiers.  Good work to all, keeping Chris away! In case you can't read the signs around our necks -- "Do Not Disturb".  Murphy, our 13-year old dog now lives with our son and his family and she's also wearing a sign.  Best wishes to all, new residents, Dwight & Bobbi Holden, 225 Jason Dr.

Sailor's war memories still vivid

BY COX. JAMES E. JOHNSON AS TOLD TO ABBY WEINGARTEN
(From the Sarasota Herald Tribune - August 5, 2006)

Jimmie and Louise Johnson live at 141 Shirley Drive in Orange Acres.

At 17, James "Jimmie" Johnson saw enough horror on the Normandy beachheads to haunt him for the rest of his life. A coxswain in the Navy, he enlisted in 1942 in Brooklyn, N.Y., and served on the LST-209 for three years during World War II.

August 21 - Monday

A message from Hugh & Faye Spinney:

Hugh taught my aunt Joan Cunningham (Joan & Bruce rented # 3 Jeffrey) how to make spaghetti sauce when we visited them while we were on vacation in the Maritimes this summer.

We also visited Kay and John Papenburg near Kentville, NS.  They are quite well.   Kay is having some problems with her eyes and has had surgery on one but has to wait a few months for the second eye.  John looked very well, still driving his car to Dr. appointments.  They are settled into a nice new duplex and a home health aid comes in and helps with meals, etc.  We brought them up to date on OA happenings.
We have had a busy summer - in the Maritimes for 5 weeks.  During that time Hugh went on a week's ATV tour of Newfoundland (road the old railroad bed)  He is planning a moose hunting trip in Newfoundland before we head south in October.
We miss all our friends in OA.  Keep up the good work on the web site as it helps us keep in touch.
Keep those hurricanes off shore!!!  Hugh & Faye
